Ferocactus herrerae, also known as the "twisted barrel cactus" is a species of barrel cactus native to Mexico. Here are some details about its habitat, growth habit, mature size, cold tolerance, and flower color:

Habitat: Ferocactus herrerae is typically found in its native habitat along the Pacific coast of Mexico, specifically in the states of Colima and Jalisco. It prefers well-draining soils in rocky or sandy areas.

Growth Habit: This cactus species has a solitary growth habit, meaning that individual plants usually grow on their own rather than in clusters. It forms a distinctive barrel shape with ribs and prominent spines.  As this cactus grows the body will start to twist giving it a very unique appearance among barrel cacti.  This twisted growth habit is not evident until the plants reach approximately two feet tall.

Mature Size: Ferocactus herrerae can reach a mature size of about 6 feet in height and 2 feet in diameter.  Our 5gal plants are averaging 10"x10".

Cold Tolerance: It is known for its relatively high cold tolerance compared to some other cactus species. However, it is still important to protect it from severe frost, as extended periods of freezing temperatures can damage the plant.  These cacti are realiably hardy to ten degrees farenheit for short durations.

Flower Color: The flowers of Ferocactus herrerae are typically yellow or orange, adding a vibrant splash of color to the cactus. The flowers emerge from the top of the plant and are usually funnel-shaped.  All of our plants are flowering size.
