The Yin Yang symbol has ancient origins, and its exact origins are obscure. According to Britannica, the Yin Yang idea formed the basis of an entire school of cosmology (the Yinyang school) in China in the 3rd century BCE, whose main representative was Zou Yan. Zou Yan was a renowned philosopher and academic in ancient China who theorized that life went through five different phases: fire, water, metal, wood, and earth, and these phases always changed depending on if they were in a Yin or Yang state. The earliest evidence of the Yin Yang symbol appears on various animal skeletal remains used in China for divination. These oracle bones have been used at least as early as the 14th century BC, but the earliest evidence we have today of Yin and Yang dates to the 3rd century BC.The symbol also has roots in ancient Chinese time-keeping systems, using a pole to measure the changing lengths of shadows over the solar year.

The Yin-Yang symbol may has its origin in ancient China, but it continues to be used today in a variety of contexts.
